Guardian Home Program

In order to be considered as a Guardian Home, you must live within 90 minutes of Higbee, MO and be flexible to drop off and pick up the dog for health testing, vet visits, breeding, and whelping puppies.

Here at Kyon Kennel we strive to provide our breeding dogs with the very best life possible! It is important to us to keep everyone happy and healthy by limiting how many dogs we personally keep at our kennel. With that being said, we are always looking to grow and promote diversity by adding quality blood-lines and to continuously reevaluate our program. How are we going to make this possible? For us, and many other breeders like us, the answer is a Guardian Home Program! We view our Guardian Home Program as a win-win situation. Our Guardian Families receive a quality puppy free of charge in return for working with Kyon Kennel LLC during the breeding years of the dog and it allows us to expand our dog breeding program by keeping our pack at home to a small number. We have peace of mind knowing our breeding dogs are living a wonderful life where each dog is a cherished member of the family.

As a Guardian Home, you get a high quality, dog or puppy free of charge and you become their forever home. Kyon Kennel LLC retains breeding rights of the dog. For females, this starts at sexual maturity and ends once the female has whelped (given birth) to 4 litters. For males, this also starts at sexual maturity but the contracts tend to be longer as we breed them on an “as needed” basis.

While the dog is in our breeding program, Kyon Kennel LLC pays for all breeding-related expenses. Guardian Homes are responsible for all typical “pet” expenses and maintenance, including, but not limited to, grooming by a professional, dog food, pet-related vet visits (annual vaccinations, parasite prevention-following Kyon Kennel LLC's guidelines), training, etc. (Refer to the bullet list below.)

Once a dog passes its health testing, Kyon Kennel LLC decides when each dog will be bred and to whom. Females stay with their Guardian Family during pregnancy (normal gestation is about 63 days) and then she is returned to us a few days before her due date (normally around day 52) to deliver (whelp) and raise her puppies. Once the puppies are weaned, which is typically when pups are around 6-8 weeks of age, the female can be picked up by her Guardian Family. When the dog has completed his or her breeding obligations, we pay for the spay or neuter and release ownership of the dog to you so that he or she can return home to enjoy the wonderful life that you have provided for him or her since puppyhood.

There are many things that Guardian Families need to consider. Guardian Families of female dogs will need to learn the signs of a heat cycle and keep their girl protected from unwanted males. The Guardian Family must be willing to communicate, cooperate and coordinate with us to ensure a successful breeding and will have to be comfortable being away from their dog for an extended period of time (around 2-3 months each litter). Male dogs can only mate with approved females, so the Guardian Home is responsible for keeping the male away from intact female dogs. Guardian Families of intact males will also need to consider the importance of keeping him properly contained to prevent unwanted litters.

• Live within 90 minutes of Higbee, MO and be flexible for dropping off and or us picking up the dog for health testing, vet visits, breeding, and whelping.
• Be prepared for a home visit and provide references prior to the dog or puppy being placed.
• Keep the dog safe and contained at all times either in your home, with an underground fence or a fenced in backyard.
• Females: have no intact males in the home and notify us when a heat cycle begins.
• Males: have no intact females in the home and keep contained to prevent unwanted litters.
• Take the dog to our vet for vet care. Kyon Kennel LLC pays for health testing and breeding-related vet expenses while the dog is in our program. The Guardian is in charge of all routine, pet-related vet expenses, just like with any typical "pet" dog.
• Provide basic daily care and basic training that is standard for dog ownership (house, leash, and crate training, as well as basic obedience and manners).
• Keep the dog or puppy on a routine grooming schedule. Can be done in home or with a professional groomer.
• Feed our recommended diet of Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy or Adult food.
• No plans of relocating within the next 5 years.
• Understand that we are waiving the purchase price of the dog in exchange for a service. You must be willing to communicate, cooperate and coordinate with us during their time in our program, and be dedicated to providing a safe, loving home for the lifetime of the dog.
